Key takeaways
- A courier website needs three customer tools: tracking, pickup booking and a price calculator, each fed by operations data.
- Quotes match invoices only when the calculator charges on chargeable weight, the higher of actual and volumetric weight.
- Tracking pages expose names, phone numbers and addresses, so mask personal details and block number-guessing.
- In India, tracking SMS need Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) registration and whitelisted links.
- Build pages only for real, staffed branches; cloned city pages risk Google's doorway abuse policy.
Courier website development is the work of building a site where customers can track a shipment, book a pickup and get a price without calling your branch. Each tool runs on data your operations team already holds: scan events for tracking, a pincode list for serviceability and a rate card for pricing.
Get that data right and the website answers routine questions on its own. This guide explains how each tool works, which Indian rules apply and what drives the cost.
What does a courier website need to do?
A courier website needs to do three jobs for customers: show where a parcel is, take a pickup booking and give a price they can trust. Around those sit a pincode serviceability check, a branch locator and, for business shippers, accounts with their own rate cards.
An air waybill (AWB) number is the unique reference a courier gives each shipment, and customers type it into the tracking box.

The website is the customer-facing layer. Dispatch, hub scanning and rider assignment usually live in separate operations software, and the website reads from it.
Freight is a different build. Part loads, full truckloads and lane-based quotes need transport management system (TMS) integration and driver portals, which is closer to logistics website development than to a parcel site.
How does a courier tracking website work?
A courier tracking website turns scan events into a status timeline. Each time a parcel is picked up, scanned at a hub or handed to a rider, your operations system records an event. The tracking page looks up the air waybill (AWB) number and shows those events in plain language, newest first.
Where tracking data comes from
- Your own operations system. If hubs and riders scan into your own software, the website reads those events directly.
- A carrier or aggregator API. An application programming interface (API) lets two systems exchange data on request. Delhivery and Blue Dart offer tracking and pincode APIs to account holders. Ask for webhooks too: messages the carrier's system sends yours the moment a status changes.
- A hand-off. A link to the carrier's own tracking page. It is cheap, but the customer leaves your site.
Never scrape a carrier's tracking page. The scraper breaks whenever that page changes.
Raqbash built a freight tracking portal for a freight forwarding firm that pulls air, sea and road updates from carrier integrations into one milestone timeline. A courier that books through several carriers needs the same pattern.
Live status and rider location
A simple page refreshes on reload or every few minutes, which is called polling. A WebSocket, a two-way browser-to-server connection, pushes each change as it happens.
A rider moving on a map needs more. The website only shows what the rider's phone sends, so plan a rider app early. Our breakdown of mobile app development cost shows what that adds.
How to stop a tracking page leaking customer data
Tracking numbers are easy to guess, and a tracking page shows names, phone numbers and addresses. The Open Worldwide Application Security Project (OWASP) API Security Top 10 2023 ranks Broken Object Level Authorization as the top API risk (opens in a new tab). In practice, if changing one digit of an AWB number shows someone else's parcel, the page is broken. OWASP Top 10:2025 reports that 100% of tested applications had some form of broken access control (opens in a new tab).
| Risk | Fix |
|---|---|
| Guessable AWB numbers | Non-sequential IDs; full details only after a one-time password (OTP) |
| Bulk scraping by bots | Rate limits and bot checks |
| Exposed proof of delivery (POD) photos | POD images only for the verified receiver |
| OTP pumping, where bots trigger paid SMS | Limits per number and network address |

Keep access logs too. Directions from the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), dated 28 April 2022, require organisations to report cyber incidents within 6 hours of noticing them (opens in a new tab) (PDF). The same Directions require logs to be kept for a rolling 180 days within India.
Security is also a legal duty. Under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act), failing to take reasonable security safeguards can draw a penalty of up to ₹250 crore (₹2,500,000,000) (opens in a new tab) (PDF). That is about US$26 million at ₹95.9927 per US dollar, the Financial Benchmarks India Ltd (FBIL) reference rate for 1 October 2026.
What should a parcel booking website ask for?
A parcel booking website should ask only for what the pickup, the price and the law need. That means both addresses with PIN codes, the parcel's size and weight, its declared value, a pickup slot and a payment choice. Check serviceability first, so customers in unserved pincodes find out before they fill in the rest.

For addresses a PIN code cannot pin down, add an optional DIGIPIN field. The Department of Posts' DIGIPIN divides India into grids of approximately 4 m × 4 m and gives each grid a unique 10-character code (opens in a new tab). It works offline and stores no personal data.
When the Department launched its Know Your DIGIPIN portal on 27 May 2025, Vandita Kaul, Secretary of the Department of Posts (opens in a new tab), said: "DIGIPIN, in particular, will redefine how we perceive addresses, ensuring that every citizen, even in the remotest part of the country, is digitally locatable and serviceable."
Under India's Goods and Services Tax (GST) rules, an e-way bill is required for consignments valued above ₹50,000 (opens in a new tab) (PDF). The e-way bill FAQ from the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) lets a courier agency fill Part A on the consignor's authorisation. Ask for e-way bill details once the declared value crosses that line.
The Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Rules, 2025, notified in November 2025, introduce an eighteen-month period for phased compliance (opens in a new tab). Every Data Fiduciary, the business deciding why and how data is processed, must issue a separate consent notice that is clear and easy to understand. Receiver details come from the sender, so ask your lawyer how you will justify processing them.
On a last-mile delivery platform for an urban courier service, Raqbash built automatic order assignment, live tracking with arrival estimates, a rider app and photo and signature proof of delivery, so each pickup booking reaches a rider directly.
How do you build a courier price calculator that matches the invoice?
A courier price calculator matches the invoice when it applies your billing team's rules in the same order. It works out the chargeable weight, finds the zone for the two pincodes and looks up the rate for that zone and weight slab. Then it adds surcharges and tax. Skip one rule and the quote and the invoice disagree.
Volumetric weight is a parcel's size converted into kilograms, so a large, light box pays for its space. DHL's volumetric weight guide, first published in April 2025, says DHL Express typically uses a divisor of 5,000 (opens in a new tab) on length × width × height in centimetres. Carriers generally charge the higher of volumetric and actual weight, which is the chargeable weight. Divisors vary by carrier and contract, so use your own.
- Take the higher of actual and volumetric weight.
- Round it up to your next weight slab, for example 0.5 kg.
- Find the zone for the two pincodes in your zone matrix, a table that maps pincode pairs to price zones.
- Apply the zone and slab rate, add surcharges such as fuel, out-of-delivery-area (ODA) and cash on delivery (COD), then show GST as a separate line.
In this illustrative example, the rates are invented assumptions, not market prices: ₹40 per 0.5 kg slab, a 10% fuel surcharge and a flat ₹50 COD fee.
| Step | Working | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Actual weight | Scale reading | 3 kg |
| Volumetric weight | 40 × 30 × 20 cm ÷ 5,000 | 4.8 kg |
| Chargeable weight | Higher figure, rounded up to 0.5 kg | 5 kg |
| Base charge | 10 slabs × ₹40 | ₹400 |
| Surcharges | 10% fuel plus ₹50 COD | ₹90 |
| Total before GST | ₹400 + ₹90 | ₹490 |
Actual weight
- Working
- Scale reading
- Result
- 3 kg
Volumetric weight
- Working
- 40 × 30 × 20 cm ÷ 5,000
- Result
- 4.8 kg

- 5 kg

- Working

- 10% fuel plus ₹50 COD
- Result

Without the volumetric step, the quote would say 3 kg and the invoice 5 kg. That gap is the complaint a calculator exists to prevent.
Keep the rate card in an admin screen with an effective date, so your pricing team can publish a new tariff without a developer. Save the rate-card version with every quote, and a price dispute becomes a lookup.
How do tracking alerts reach customers by SMS, WhatsApp and email?
Tracking alerts reach customers by SMS, WhatsApp and email, and each channel needs setting up before launch. In India, SMS needs registration on a Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) platform run by the telecom operators. A setup gap shows up as a message that never arrives.
Under the Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations, 2018, from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), a business must register as a principal entity, with headers and templates (opens in a new tab). A header is the sender ID customers see, an alphanumeric string of up to 11 characters.
Links need one more step. TRAI directed operators to block SMS carrying non-whitelisted URLs, APKs or OTT links (opens in a new tab), with the rule implemented by 1 October 2024. APKs are Android app files, and OTT links point to over-the-top apps such as messaging services. A tracking link on a domain you have not whitelisted will not arrive.
The WhatsApp Business Platform has charged on a per-message basis since 1 July 2025 (opens in a new tab). Utility templates delivered inside an open customer service window, which lasts 24 hours, are free.
| Channel | Set up before launch | Common failure |
|---|---|---|
| SMS | DLT principal entity, headers, templates and whitelisted link domains | Unregistered templates or links |
| Business account and message templates | Template charges outside an open window | |
| Sending domain set up with your mail provider | Messages landing in spam |

Courier company website design that ranks: branch pages, tracking pages and speed
Courier company website design ranks when each real branch gets its own useful page, the tracking page is fast and indexable, and the site avoids mass-produced city pages. That lets you compete for your own tracking searches and for local searches near each branch.
Google's spam policies list pages targeted at specific regions or cities (opens in a new tab) that funnel users to one page as an example of doorway abuse. A courier site that clones one template for every city fits that description.
Google Business Profile follows the same logic. Its guidelines tell you not to create more than one page for each location (opens in a new tab) of your business, and service-area businesses should hide their address. List each staffed branch once, with hours that match its branch page.
- Do give each branch page its address, hours, pickup cut-off time, serviceable pincodes and phone number.
- Don't publish pincode or city pages that differ only in the place name.
- Do keep one fast, indexable "[Brand] tracking" page with the lookup form, because tracking aggregator sites compete for these searches.
- Don't let individual result pages into search; mark them noindex.
- Do add LocalBusiness structured data to each branch page.
The HTTP Archive Web Almanac 2025 found that only 48% of mobile websites had good Core Web Vitals (opens in a new tab) in its July 2025 data. Core Web Vitals are Google's three page-experience metrics: Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), Interaction to Next Paint (INP) and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS). Test the tracking and booking pages on a phone first.
To hand branch pages and Business Profiles to a team, choose local SEO services that work from the same branch data as your website.
Our guide to SEO cost and timelines explains how long local SEO work takes to show results.
Template, courier software or custom build: which fits?
Choose by what the website must connect to. A theme with plugins can carry a brochure site that hands tracking to one carrier. White-label software suits a small network with standard needs. Your own rate rules, business accounts and several carrier integrations point to a custom build.
| Option | Fits when | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Theme and plugins, such as WordPress | Brochure site; tracking handed to one carrier | Shop plugins follow orders, not your scans |
| White-label courier or tracking software | Small network, standard needs | Data export, branding limits, exit cost |
| Custom build | Own rate rules, business accounts, several carriers | Higher upfront cost, ongoing maintenance |

Whichever route you take, agree in writing who owns the intellectual property (IP), the data and the cloud accounts if you change vendor, and sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) first. Raqbash publishes its security, NDA and IP ownership terms, and any vendor you shortlist should show you theirs.
If a custom build fits, see how Raqbash, a courier web development company in Ahmedabad, scopes tracking, rate quotes and pickup booking around your operations data.
What drives the cost and timeline of courier website development?
The cost and timeline of courier website development depend more on integrations and pricing rules than on page design. Every carrier API, payment option and rate rule adds build and testing work, and each carrier integration needs its own test cycle before launch.
The usual cost drivers are:
- Carrier or aggregator integrations
- Live rider tracking, which needs a rider app
- Business accounts, contract rate cards and bulk upload
- COD collection and remittance reports
- Calculator rules for zones, slabs and surcharges
Some costs start on launch day. Google's India price list for Maps Platform, effective 1 August 2024, allows 70,000 free Geocoding requests a month, then US$1.50 per 1,000 (opens in a new tab). That is about ₹144 at the 1 October 2026 FBIL rate. Geocoding turns a typed address into map coordinates for a branch locator.
Payment fees are changing too. From 15 October 2026, merchants in India pay a merchant discount rate (MDR) of 0.4% on Unified Payments Interface (UPI) payments above ₹2,000 (opens in a new tab) (PDF). The fee is capped at ₹300 for payments of ₹75,000 and above. The Department of Financial Services set this out in an FAQ dated 15 September 2026.
