Overview

News website design built for the pace of a newsroom

News website design is about speed twice over: how fast a reporter can publish, and how fast a reader's phone can open the story. We design and build portals for digital-first news outlets, city and district papers going online, trade magazines, and publishing houses. Our news website development covers the editorial CMS, article markup, ad integration, subscriptions and multilingual publishing in Hindi, English and regional languages such as Marathi, Tamil, Bengali or Gujarati.

Most traffic to a news site arrives sideways: from Google Search, Discover, a WhatsApp forward or a social post, straight onto one article. That reader never sees your homepage. If the article page is slow, jumps around as ads load or hides the next story, they leave. So we build the article page first and the homepage second. We build the platform; editorial decisions, sources and what you publish stay entirely with your newsroom.

One team

News portal website design and development, end to end

A news site has a front end readers judge in seconds and a back end your desk lives in all day, and we build both together.

Design

  • Homepage and section layouts that rank stories by editorial priority, with clear places for breaking news, top stories, opinion and video.
  • An article template tuned for reading: comfortable line length, visible bylines and timestamps, and related stories before the reader runs out of page.
  • Ad positions designed into the layout from the start, with reserved space so text doesn't jump when an ad arrives.
  • Typography that works in Hindi, English and other Indic scripts, including scripts with tall vowel signs and conjuncts that cramped fonts clip.
  • Mobile navigation for dozens of sections and cities that still gets a reader to their district in two taps.

Development

  • An editorial CMS with roles for reporters, sub-editors, editors and admins, plus draft, review, scheduled and published states.
  • NewsArticle, LiveBlogPosting and author markup, a news sitemap and clean canonical URLs on every story.
  • Edge caching that purges the right pages the moment a story changes, so breaking updates reach readers fresh.
  • Google Ad Manager or AdSense integration with lazy-loaded slots, plus a consent banner where your audience needs one.
  • Subscription and metered paywall options with Razorpay or Stripe, and push alerts and newsletters for returning readers.

Designers and engineers work on the same project, so the article template your editor approves is the one that survives real ads and real traffic.

What we build

News portal development services

Six things we build for newsrooms and publishers. Most portals combine four or five.

  • Digital news portals

Homepage, section, city, tag and article templates for daily news, built to carry a heavy publishing schedule without layout fixes.
  • Editorial CMS and workflows

Roles, approvals, scheduling, revision history and a corrections field, set up to match how your desk already works.
  • Magazine and long-read sites

Issue archives, feature layouts with large imagery, columnist pages and a reading experience made for longer pieces.
  • Subscriptions and paywalls

Metered or hard paywalls, member tiers, gift links and recurring billing, with locked articles marked properly for search.
  • Multilingual news sites

Hindi, English and regional-language editions with their own sections, URLs and hreflang tags, all managed from one CMS.
  • Redesign & maintenance

Moving off an old CMS without losing article URLs or rankings, plus uptime monitoring, patches and new sections after launch.

Search & speed

Article schema, caching and Core Web Vitals under ad load

News portal design is judged on the article page. These are the four areas where portals win or lose readers arriving from search and social.

Ready for Google's news surfaces

NewsArticle markup, a news sitemap, clear bylines and dates, and an editorial policy page. Google decides inclusion in News and Discover; we build to its published guidelines so your portal is ready to be considered.

Fast pages with ads switched on

Reserved ad sizes, lazy loading below the fold and lean scripts keep layout shift and load time in check, measured with real ads running, not a clean demo.

Traffic spikes without downtime

Pages are served from a CDN and rebuilt on publish, so an election night or a viral story hits the cache instead of your database.

Revenue beyond display ads

Subscriptions, memberships, labelled sponsored content and newsletter signups give you income that doesn't hang on one ad network.
  • NewsArticle and author structured data
  • News sitemap that updates on publish
  • Reserved ad slots that prevent layout shift
  • CDN caching with instant purge on update
  • Hindi, English and regional-language editions
  • Editorial roles with approval steps

What a news portal needs

The core templates for a news or magazine site. Regional portals often add city pages, and magazines add an issue archive.

Article page
Headline, byline, publish and update times, body, embeds, tags and related stories, with ad slots that never push text.
Section & city pages
Politics, business, sport and a page per city or district, each with its own feed and ad targeting.
Live blog
Timestamped updates for elections, budgets and matches, with pinned posts and auto-refresh for readers.
Author pages
Each journalist's bio, beat, contact and archive, which helps readers and search engines judge expertise.
Subscribe / membership
Plans, benefits, payment and account management for readers who pay.
Editorial policies
About, ownership, editorial standards, corrections and a grievance contact, written by your team.
Search & archive
Fast search across years of stories, filtered by date, section and author.

Google News & Discover

What a build can and can't do for Google News

No agency can get a portal into Google News. Google decides which sources appear in its news features, using its own content policies and signals about the publisher. What a build can do is remove the technical reasons to be passed over: valid NewsArticle markup, stable article URLs, accurate publish and update times, a news sitemap, large images for Discover, and transparent pages about who runs the site and who writes for it.

The rest belongs to the newsroom. Original reporting, visible corrections, named authors with real beats and a steady publishing rhythm are editorial work, not code. We set up Search Console with you, walk through Google's Publisher Center and explain what each signal means. If anyone guarantees you a place in Google News, treat it as a warning sign.

Regional news and magazines

Magazine website design and regional language portals

Hindi and regional-language news readers are mostly on phones, often mid-range Android handsets. A regional portal has to render Indic scripts cleanly with web fonts that don't stall the first paint, handle native-script or transliterated URLs consistently, and let a reader switch editions without losing their place. We settle fonts, URL rules and language tags in discovery, because changing them after launch breaks links.

Magazine website design asks for a slower pace. A monthly or quarterly title sells depth and design, so feature templates use large imagery, pull quotes and chapter-style layouts, and the archive is organised by issue as well as by topic. Publisher website design for a book or trade publisher adds catalogue pages, author profiles, rights enquiries and a store for print and digital editions.

Why Raqbash

Why choose Raqbash as your news portal design partner

A news site is a product your desk uses every hour. We judge our work by how it holds up on a heavy news day, not by a launch-day screenshot.

4.9 rated on Google Reviews
  • We design for the desk

We sit with reporters and editors before designing anything, so the CMS matches the way stories actually move through your newsroom.
  • Speed measured with ads

We test Core Web Vitals with your real ad tags live, because a portal that only scores well with ads switched off isn't fast.
  • Built for the spike

Caching, purge rules and load tests are part of the build, so a big story doesn't take the site down at the worst moment.
  • Indic scripts done properly

Devanagari, Tamil, Bengali and other fonts, line heights and URL rules are chosen early and checked on real phones.
  • Honest about search

We explain what markup and speed can do and what depends on your journalism, and we never promise a ranking or a news listing.
  • Your team owns it

Training for the desk, documentation for your tech lead and support on call after launch.

Publishers we build websites for

Newsrooms and publishers work at different speeds. These are the six kinds we build for most.

  • Digital-first news portals

High-frequency publishing, live blogs, video and push alerts for outlets born online.
  • Regional & city news

Hindi and state-language editions, district pages and local ad inventory.
  • Newspapers moving online

Print desks shifting to web-first workflows, with e-paper archives and subscription bundles.
  • Magazines

Issue-based archives, long-form features and member access for lifestyle, business and trade titles.
  • Trade & niche publishers

Industry news, directories, events and sponsored content for B2B audiences.
  • Book & content publishers

Catalogues, author pages, rights enquiries and stores for print and digital titles.

How we work

Our news website development process

Six steps from first call to launch. Step four is a newsroom rehearsal on the real platform before readers ever see it.

  1. Step 01

    Discover

We map your sections, desk roles, publishing volume, ad setup, languages, current CMS and traffic peaks.

  2. Step 02

    Design

We design the article, section and homepage templates first as prototypes, then test them with your editors.

  3. Step 03

    Build

We build the CMS, templates and caching layer, and migrate your archive with a URL map for every story.

  4. Step 04

    Newsroom rehearsal

Your reporters and editors publish, update and correct real stories on staging while we watch for friction, then we load-test the cache and check ad behaviour.

  5. Step 05

    Launch

We switch over with redirects for every old URL, resubmit sitemaps and watch errors and speed through the first news cycles.

  6. Step 06

    Support

We stay on call for breaking-news days, add sections and features, and keep the platform patched.

Cost & timeline

News portal cost and timeline

Three common scopes for publishers. Each one gets a written, fixed-scope quote before work starts.

News portal cost and timeline
ScopeWhat's includedTypical timelineWhat drives costPrice
Starter news siteHomepage, sections, article and author templates, NewsArticle markup, a news sitemap, ad slots and basic SEO.4–6 weeksSections, design depth, archive sizeFrom ₹40,000
Full news portalEverything above, plus editorial workflows, live blogs, multilingual editions, push alerts, newsletters and archive migration.8–12 weeksLanguages, migration volume, desk rolesFixed-scope quote
Subscription publishing platformA high-traffic portal with a paywall or membership, reader accounts, custom ad logic, search and load-tested caching.12–20 weeksPaywall model, traffic level, integrationsFixed-scope quote

Archive migration is usually the slowest part. Years of old stories, images and URLs need mapping one by one, so we size it in discovery instead of guessing.

Every project gets a fixed-scope quote in writing before work starts.

FAQ

News website design FAQs

Questions editors, publishers and media founders ask us about cost, CMS choice, Google News and revenue.

How much does news website design cost?

A starter news site with sections, article templates, markup and ad slots starts from about ₹40,000. Full portals with workflows, several languages and archive migration cost more, and subscription platforms built for heavy traffic more again. Price depends on your sections and languages, how much archive we move and which revenue features you need. We quote a fixed scope after discovery.

How long does news website development take?

A starter site usually takes four to six weeks, a full portal eight to twelve, and a subscription platform twelve to twenty. Archive migration and editorial sign-off move the date more than code does. We agree a cut-over plan early so the desk never stops publishing during the switch.

Do you do both the design and the development of news portals?

Yes. The same team handles news portal website design and the build behind it. Designers plan the article, section and homepage templates; developers build the CMS, caching, ads and paywall. You work with one team, and the templates your editors approve are the ones that go live.

Should we use WordPress or a custom CMS for our news portal?

WordPress powers a large share of the world's news sites and suits most portals: reporters already know it and the plugin ecosystem is mature. For high traffic we often pair it, or Strapi, with a Next.js front end on a CDN, which keeps pages fast under load. We recommend one after seeing your desk and your traffic.

Can you get our portal into Google News or Discover?

No one can promise that, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Google decides which publishers appear, based on its policies and its own signals. We build the technical side to Google's published guidelines: article markup, a news sitemap, bylines, dates, image sizes and transparency pages. Original reporting and a consistent publishing record are what your newsroom adds.

Will ads slow down our news website?

They can, which is why we design for them. Ad slots get reserved space so content doesn't shift, ads below the fold load as the reader scrolls, and we keep third-party scripts in check. We measure Core Web Vitals with your actual ad tags running. If an ad partner's script is the bottleneck, we show you the numbers so you can decide.

What do the IT Rules mean for our news website?

Indian digital news publishers have duties under the IT Rules 2021, such as appointing a grievance officer and publishing their contact details. We build the pages, forms and footer links these need. What the pages say, and whether you meet the rules, is for your legal team to confirm. We don't give legal advice.
