Key takeaways

  • Since 6 October 2026, the NMC treats websites and blogs as advertising media, so "best doctor", "100% success" and patient testimonials are out.
  • Every doctor page should show the doctor's name, recognised qualifications, registration status and State Medical Council or NMR registration number.
  • A clinic website should load its main content within 2.5 seconds on a phone, because most Indian patients arrive on mobile.
  • Google no longer shows FAQ rich results, and self-published testimonials cannot earn star ratings in search.
  • India's Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Rules require a separate, plain consent notice on every patient form.

A website for doctors is a practice's own site that tells patients who the doctor is, what they treat, when they are available and how to book. In India it now has a second job: staying inside the National Medical Commission (NMC) rules on advertising, which were tightened on 6 October 2026. This guide covers the pages every clinic website needs, and the claims it can no longer make.

What does a website for doctors need in 2026?

Every website for doctors in 2026 needs eight things. They are factual doctor pages, condition pages, timings and fees, a simple booking path, fast mobile pages, accurate Google listings, accessible design and consent-first forms. Each one must be written within the NMC rules on advertising.

Use this checklist as the short version of the article.

The order matters less than the gaps. In our experience, most doctor sites have the first and third items and very little else.

What changed for doctor websites on 6 October 2026?

On 6 October 2026, the Ethics and Medical Registration Board of the National Medical Commission (NMC) issued its Guidelines on Ethical Advertising and Public Communication. They apply to registered medical practitioners (RMPs) and to hospitals and medical institutions, and they name websites and blogs as a medium of advertisement. The public notice took effect the same day.

"The Guidelines shall come into force with immediate effect," wrote Dr Raghav Langer, Secretary of the NMC (opens in a new tab) (PDF), in the signed notice. The guidelines are read with the Indian Medical Council (Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Ethics) Regulations, 2002, which still govern doctors' conduct.

The useful part for a website is the line between information and promotion. Here is how it falls.

  • Name, qualifications, registration status and SMR/NMR number

    Status under the 2026 guidelines
Expected on online posts (para 3.2)
  • Doctor directory with specialties and availability

    Status under the 2026 guidelines
Treated as patient information (para 9.1)
  • Factual fees and change-of-address notices

    Status under the 2026 guidelines
    Permitted (para 9.3)
  • "Best doctor", "No.1", "100% success", "guaranteed cure"

    Status under the 2026 guidelines
    Prohibited (para 8.1)
  • Before-and-after photos, patient success stories

    Status under the 2026 guidelines
    Prohibited for promotion (para 8.1)
  • Discounts, coupons, free procedures as inducements

    Status under the 2026 guidelines
    Prohibited (para 8.1)
  • Fake, paid or manipulated reviews and rankings

    Status under the 2026 guidelines
    Prohibited (para 8.1 and 3.2)

Patient consent does not rescue a testimonial. The guidelines say consent alone does not make an otherwise prohibited testimonial or before-and-after image acceptable.

AI content gets its own rule. Promotional content generated by AI must carry a mark saying so, and AI must not be used to create patient images, voices or testimonials.

Watch your agency contract too. Para 8.1(viii) says marketing agencies must not be paid in a way that links payment to the referral of individual patients. A "pay per booked appointment" deal now carries real risk.

The doctor's photograph is a grey area. Para 9.2 bars a photo where it amounts to self-advertisement or solicitation. A plain profile photo in a directory reads as information, but a banner photo with a slogan does not. If unsure, ask your State Medical Council before publishing.

Penalties under the guidelines are graded. A State Medical Council (SMC) applies them only after issuing a show-cause notice.

  • First

    Action the SMC may take
    Warning and mandatory ethics training
  • Second

    Action the SMC may take
    Censure and monetary penalty
  • Third

    Action the SMC may take
Suspension of registration for 3 to 6 months
  • Serious (misleading cure claims, inducements)

    Action the SMC may take
Suspension for 6 to 12 months
  • Repeated

    Action the SMC may take
Removal from the register for 1 to 3 years

Which pages should a doctor website design include?

A good doctor website design needs five page types. They are doctor profiles, condition and treatment pages, a timings and fees page, a booking page and a contact page with a map. Each page should read like a factual directory entry, not an advertisement.

  • Doctor profile

    What it must show
Name, recognised degrees, specialty, registration number
    Rule behind it
    NMC 2002, regulation 1.4
  • Condition page

    What it must show
Symptoms, when to visit, how the clinic helps
    Rule behind it
    NMC 2026, para 8.1
  • Timings and fees

    What it must show
    Session hours, consultation fee
    Rule behind it
    NMC 2002, regulation 3.7.1
  • Booking

    What it must show
    Doctor, service, slot
    Rule behind it
    Practical
  • Contact

    What it must show
    Address, phone, map, directions
    Rule behind it
    Practical

Registration details are not new. The 2002 Regulations already require every physician to display the registration number in the clinic and on prescriptions (opens in a new tab), certificates and receipts. The same regulations allow only recognised degrees after a doctor's name. They also bar a doctor from claiming to be a specialist without a qualification in that branch.

Write condition pages for the patient who is worried, not for a search engine. Explain the symptoms, say when a visit is needed, and stop there. Promises of a cure belong nowhere on the page.

The doctor should approve every medical page before it goes live, with a review date shown. If you are briefing a clinic website development company, ask to see how it handles that sign-off step.

How should patients book appointments from a clinic website?

A clinic website should let a patient choose a doctor, a service and a free slot, then confirm in under a minute. Keep the form short, show tap-to-call and WhatsApp buttons on every page, and send a confirmation straight away. A phone number alone loses patients who search after clinic hours.

The booking calendar must be the same one the front desk uses. If it is not, double bookings start in the first week.

Leave out offers. "Free first consultation" or festival discounts can count as inducements under para 8.1(x) of the NMC guidelines. Stating your fee plainly is allowed and helps patients decide.

The expensive decision is where booking lives. A third-party widget is quicker to launch. A custom booking engine costs more, but it keeps the patient data and the doctor's rules under your control. Raqbash built a telemedicine platform with integrated appointment booking for a multi-specialty clinic network, where booking, reminders and payments run in one flow across web, iOS and Android.

How fast does a clinic website need to be?

A clinic website should show its main content within 2.5 seconds on a mid-range phone, respond to a tap within 200 milliseconds, and not jump around as it loads. These are Google's Core Web Vitals, and they measure what a patient actually experiences.

Google's Core Web Vitals guidance, updated on 10 December 2025, asks for Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) within 2.5 seconds (opens in a new tab). The same guidance sets Interaction to Next Paint (INP) under 200 milliseconds and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) under 0.1.

Most sites miss them. The HTTP Archive Web Almanac 2025 found that 48% of mobile websites had good Core Web Vitals in 2025 (opens in a new tab), measured globally. A fast clinic site is already ahead of half the web.

The phone is where patients meet you. According to a Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) release of 28 September 2026, India had 1,033.24 million mobile wireless broadband subscribers (opens in a new tab) (PDF) at the end of August 2026. The TRAI count includes machine-to-machine connections. Google also uses the mobile version of your site for indexing and ranking (opens in a new tab).

Speed is cheapest to build in and costly to add later. Ask for Core Web Vitals targets in the contract, and ask your website development services provider to report field data after launch.

How do doctors get found on Google without breaking NMC rules?

Doctors get found on Google through an accurate Google Business Profile, factual pages that show real medical expertise, and genuine reviews. The National Medical Commission (NMC) rules shape all three, because listings, reviews and rankings now count as advertising. Good local search work for a doctor is mostly accuracy and patience.

Start with the listing. Google's guidelines treat doctors as individual practitioners who may have their own Business Profile (opens in a new tab), and the profile may include a title such as Dr. Keep the doctor's name, timings and address identical on the website and the listing. If you hire local SEO services, ask them to start with exactly this check.

Health pages are held to a higher standard. Google calls them "Your Money or Your Life" topics, and its guidance says it gives more weight to experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust (E-E-A-T) on health topics (opens in a new tab). A named doctor, a review date and plain language all help.

Reviews need care from two directions. The NMC bars fake, paid or manipulated reviews and ratings, and bars doctors from sharing testimonials for promotion on social media. Google adds that reviews a business controls about itself are ineligible for star ratings on LocalBusiness pages (opens in a new tab). So testimonials on your own site earn no stars and may breach the NMC rules.

Two more changes matter in 2026. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results from 7 May 2026 (opens in a new tab), so FAQ markup no longer wins extra space. And Google's advice on hiring an SEO, updated on 5 June 2026, says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking (opens in a new tab) on Google.

If you want help with listings and condition pages, look for clinic SEO services that work within these rules and report calls and bookings rather than promises.

What does medical website design need for accessibility?

Medical website design should meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. Many patients are older, have poor eyesight or use a phone with shaky hands. Accessible design lets them read the page and book without help.

Two WCAG 2.2 rules are easy to check on any clinic site. Buttons and links should be at least 24 by 24 CSS pixels under WCAG 2.2 (opens in a new tab), and body text needs a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1. Pale grey text on white fails the second test.

Test with a keyboard and a screen reader before launch, not after a complaint.

What do India's data rules mean for clinic website forms?

Every form on a clinic website collects personal data, and often health data. India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act) and its 2025 Rules require a clear consent notice at each form. The National Medical Commission (NMC) guidelines add that advertising which uses personal data must follow the same law.

The DPDP Rules were notified on 14 November 2025. A Press Information Bureau summary of 17 November 2025 describes an eighteen-month period for phased compliance (opens in a new tab) (PDF) and a separate consent notice that explains the specific purpose of each collection. Most website duties therefore land in May 2027.

Collect only what the front desk needs: name, phone number and preferred slot. A free-text "symptoms" box invites sensitive data you then have to protect.

Patient images are covered as well. The NMC guidelines bar identifiable patient photos, records or stories in advertising unless the law permits it and specific, documented consent exists. For the full rule set, read Raqbash's guide to healthcare website compliance in India.

How do you audit your clinic website in 30 minutes?

You can audit a clinic website in 30 minutes with a phone, Google's free PageSpeed Insights tool and this list. Work through it in order and note each failure. Most fixes are content edits you can finish in an afternoon, not rebuilds.

  1. Open every doctor page and check the name, qualifications, registration status and registration number.
  2. Search the site for "best", "No.1", "guaranteed", "100%" and "painless", and remove them.
  3. Remove testimonials, before-and-after photos and patient stories used for promotion.
  4. Remove discount and free-consultation offers; keep plain fee information.
  5. Book a test appointment on a phone and time it.
  6. Run the home page through PageSpeed Insights on the mobile tab.
  7. Compare timings and address on the site with the Google Business Profile.
  8. Submit a test enquiry and check that a consent notice appears first.

Illustrative example. Assume a two-doctor clinic site with a "Best Paediatrician in the City" banner and three patient testimonials. The site also runs a Diwali discount on check-ups and has a home page LCP of 4.1 seconds. The audit flags four issues. The banner, testimonials and discount are content edits for an afternoon. The slow page is the only fix that may need a developer.

If the audit turns up a rebuild, compare vendors on the same terms. Raqbash's guide on how to choose a healthcare website development company lists the questions to ask.

Raqbash builds websites for doctors and clinics from its in-house team in Ahmedabad. On a medical site, we check each doctor page, booking path and form against the NMC guidelines and DPDP Rules, then scope and estimate before you commit. Work runs in two-week sprints with a working demo each cycle and one named point of contact, and we stay on after launch for monitoring and updates. We build the site; your doctors sign off the medical content. To get an estimate for your practice, share your clinic's requirements.
